Through Her Eyes: A Wife's Journey With Prostate Cancer

This series focuses on the perspective, emotions, and experience(s) that the artist went through as the wife of a man diagnosed with and recovering from prostate cancer.

The familiar and repeating shape(s), in circular form, represent the range of emotions and thoughts felt during the different stages of her husband’s diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.  At times, they are symbolic of the way she saw the world, her thoughts about life and death, the feelings of grief, fear, and relief, and the appreciation of support given by friends, family, medical personnel, and strangers alike.  Additionally, they relate to the many aspects of disease, medicine, and the internal workings of the human body on a mental, physical, cellular, and global level.

Cracked backgrounds serve to further enhance the raw emotions and thoughts felt and demonstrate the fragility of health and life. The specific combinations of mixed media and the colors used emphasize and compliment the experience(s) and emotion(s) expressed on the canvas.

It is a journey with the mind, heart, and soul of a mother, wife, and human on an artistic level, while experiencing one of the most trying times of her husband’s and families life.

The creation of this series was both cathartic and freeing and it is the hope of the artist that the sharing of this series will help others who have gone through or are going through a similar experience know that they are not alone and also, to help bring more awareness to this disease.
